Parenting Matters (Part II) Parent’s Rights
In this Episode of @putemonthecouch.podbean.com Jason and Nelson discuss the trials and tribulations of contemporary parenting. We also welcome our first guest, professional school counselor, Whitney McCoy, to the show. Ms. McCoy kindly agrees to be interviewed to discuss SEL. What is it? Why does it matter? Why does there seem to be so much opposition to it?

I’ve learned so much from these podcasts. Y’all are taking these topics and making them your own. Have you ever thought about having a parent on your podcast?

These ideas are so important! I recall how much I was surprised by the behavior of parents during my children’s sports experiences. I recall that even during practices there were parents filming in order to provide feedback. Our home was welcoming to all kids. This included (of course) kids rejected by their parents because they’d “come out”. I was nearly always impressed by teachers and administrators although there were a few exceptions. I sought to partner with educators- not assuming that my children were always right. I recall two negative experiences whereby I shared what was going on- in one case my child was being harassed- I played the phone message to the police after the phone company suggested it- and got nowhere. In the other case I shared with a teacher that my child was having trouble with our divorce. She proceeded to warn other parents to keep their children away. This was an exception to otherwise feeling that we were on team Student success and school respect and responsibility. My kids aren’t in a bubble. Others will be different in beliefs and attitudes. All important lessons and why I support public education. Thanks for your show and sharing! Please keep up the great work! We need a diverse school board that doesn’t only reflect part of the community. One members spouse is one of those two exceptions I mentioned. My children are college graduates working in their careers. I continue to support Public schools- but that includes all children from all families- not just some.
